The Department 14 Water Management, Resources and Sustainability within the Office of the Styrian Provincial Government is responsible for the coordination and technical execution of all water management tasks in Styria. This includes water management planning and water body management (implementation of the EU Water Framework Directive, National Water Body Management Plan), the hydrography service and flood forecasting, the administration of public water assets and the water register, urban and protective water management including watercourse maintenance as well as torrent and avalanche control, waste and resource management (Provincial Waste Management Plan, inspections, electronic data management, funding), as well as sustainability coordination and the implementation of the Austrian Sustainability Strategy at the provincial level. The department advises municipalities, associations, municipal enterprises, companies, NGOs, and private individuals in the planning and implementation of water management, waste management, and sustainability-related projects, administers funding, coordinates the implementation of EU directives, and promotes innovative measures for sustainable development in the region.
