Description

The allowance for long-distance commuters from the state of Upper Austria supports employees with their main residence in Upper Austria who regularly cover a one-way distance of at least 25 kilometers to their workplace. Funding is provided to natural persons whose annual income is below the specified income threshold and who commute directly between their place of residence and workplace—either daily or on a weekly basis. Applications for the 2024 commuting year can be submitted until February 28, 2026; for the 2025 commuting year, the application period begins on March 1, 2026. A prerequisite for funding, in addition to residence in Upper Austria, is the timely submission of the electronic application to the Finance Directorate of the Office of the Upper Austrian State Government, as well as the declaration of the number of commuting months and—if applicable—the purchase of an annual ticket from the Upper Austrian Transport Association, which triggers an ECO bonus of 30 percent.

The amount of the subsidy depends on the average road distance between the place of residence and workplace as well as the number of commuting months in the respective calendar year. For twelve eligible months, the annual subsidy amounts to 218 euros for a one-way distance of 25 to 49 km, 306 euros for 50 to 74 km, and 421 euros for 75 km or more. An additional sustainability bonus of 15 percent for hybrid vehicles or 30 percent for purely battery-powered passenger cars can be claimed. The aim of the funding is to strengthen the mobility of long-distance commuters through financial relief and incentives for environmentally friendly means of transport. Applications are preferably processed online and completed promptly upon receipt.
