Description
The cooperation initiative "Cooperation on innovative advanced materials with Japan (CSA)" supports European research teams with one-month guest stays at leading Japanese institutes. Funding covers travel expenses, accommodation, daily allowances, and insurance costs. The focus is on innovative materials with applications in mobility, energy, construction, electronics, and medical technology. With a total budget of €800,000, up to 100% of eligible expenses are covered. Submissions are only possible for consortia consisting of at least three independent legal entities from different EU or associated countries, demonstrating active research projects or publications in the thematic field. Selection is conducted through a single-stage procedure based on the criteria of degree of innovation, feasibility of methodology, as well as quality and efficiency of collaboration.
Eligible applicants are European companies, universities, non-profit or public institutions, as well as start-ups engaged in materials research and seeking to establish partnerships with Japanese research institutions. Required documents include the project description, researchers’ CVs, a financing plan, partner declarations, and the completed HE-CSA application form. An open market analysis or prior consultation is not required. This one-time call closes on April 21, 2026; applications can be submitted from January 6, 2026. The program promotes bilateral knowledge exchange and contributes to strengthening strategic partnerships by enabling European researchers to explore innovative solutions on-site in Japan. Interested consortia will be informed within a few months after submission whether they have been selected for funding.
