Description
The Energy Transition Initiative consolidates R&D funding and support measures across Austria to achieve a significant innovation boost for the implementation of energy and climate goals. The focus is on the rapid development and demonstration of forward-looking technologies – from renewable energy generation and storage solutions to hydrogen and renewable gas technologies including CCUS, as well as flexible system designs and digital transformation. Additionally, integrated demonstration projects are supported that bring together stakeholders from business and society to realize cross-sectoral solutions for specific application areas. Qualification measures and capacity-building initiatives strengthen the potential of researchers and project leaders, promote gender diversity, and lay the foundation for Europe’s technological sovereignty.
Eligible for funding are Austrian companies, non-profit organizations, and public institutions operating outside the federal administration and having a business establishment or branch in Austria at the time of disbursement. Consortium projects with international partners are possible, provided at least one partner is based in Austria. A civil law partnership (GesbR) is not eligible to apply due to lack of legal capacity. A prerequisite is proof of financial security through a cost, time, and financing plan, as well as verification of the applicants’ economic viability and insolvency-free status. Applications can be submitted continuously until 31 December 2026; the total budget amounts to €91 million. The goal is to accelerate climate neutrality by 2030 (100% renewable energy in electricity) and 2040 (cross-sectoral) and to build long-term regional innovation capacities.
