Promotion of Extracurricular School Sports by the German School Sports Foundation

The German School Sports Foundation supports public and non-profit educational institutions nationwide in the design and further development of extracurricular school sports. Since 1999, the foundation has promoted sports and physical activity among students of all school types – including those with disabilities – through grants for school sports competitions, model projects, and innovative sports programs. As the sole organizer of the federal competition “Youth Trains for the Olympics & Paralympics”, the foundation sets impulses for talent development, team spirit, and fairness. Continuous support helps to identify athletic talents early and strengthens schools as learning environments fostering enthusiasm and mutual respect.

Interested institutions may submit applications to the German School Sports Foundation on an ongoing basis, provided they are publicly or non-profit operated and organize or host school sports competitions or model projects. Funding is provided as a grant and supports not only established competitions but also innovative concepts to promote physical activity in everyday school life. Through these funding opportunities, educational institutions have the chance to professionalize their sports programs and implement inclusive sports events that impart valuable social and motor skills to students.
