Description

The Herbert and Elsbeth Weichmann Foundation primarily supports scholarly work on political exile in Hamburg through its General Funding program. The focus is on research and publication projects that address forms of political opposition in Nazi exile, aspects of memory culture, as well as literary and artistic engagement with totalitarianism and exclusion. Funding is provided for publication subsidies for monographs, anthologies, and editions, grants for archival and travel expenses, as well as material costs within the scope of academic research. Additionally, assistance can be requested for organizing and participating in scholarly events. In individual cases, the funding concept also extends to comparative exile histories from other historical periods to develop new methods and perspectives for contextualizing exile during the Nazi era.

Individuals, especially scholars whose projects align with the Foundation’s purpose, may submit applications by March 1 and September 1 each year. Applications must be submitted electronically via email to the Foundation’s office in Hamburg and include, among other documents, a signed funding application, a curriculum vitae in tabular form, a project description with a timeline and budget plan, as well as, for dissertations/habilitations, a letter of recommendation, and for publication subsidies, a publishing contract offer. The selection of funded projects is based on alignment with the Foundation’s objectives, scholarly quality, and contribution to exile research. Reviewers from the Scientific Advisory Board advise the Foundation’s Executive Board, which makes the final funding decisions on this basis.
