Description
Since February 1, 2021, preventive forest fire measures have been available for funding in Austria, playing a key role in disaster protection and climate protection. Eligible applicants include businesses, interest groups, non-profit organizations, public institutions, research institutions, and educational providers. The initiative focuses on the Europe-wide standardized forest fire risk assessment, regional monitoring and early warning systems (EFFIS/JRC), preventive forest treatments, and protective infrastructure. Priorities include the acquisition of specialized equipment according to regional forest fire strategies, measures against erosion and subsequent risks, as well as public relations and specialized training programs. Funding rates of 80% are generally granted for investment and material costs, project-related personnel costs, and travel expenses, with certain components eligible for up to 100%.
Applications must include a detailed project description, a financing plan, proof of medium to high forest fire risk, a sustainable forest management plan covering at least 100 hectares, and all legal permits (Forestry Act, Water Law, Nature Conservation). A declaration to avoid double funding is mandatory. Evaluation is based on criteria such as innovation, sustainability, relevance to forest fire prevention, and cost-benefit efficiency. Submissions are possible online throughout Austria until January 31, 2027. As a direct, non-repayable grant with a total budget of approximately EUR 14.05 million, funding is available for disbursement until January 31, 2029. Administration is carried out by Agrarmarkt Austria and the responsible regional offices through a transparent online evaluation process. This program strengthens climate-resilient forests and protects residential and economic areas in the Alpine region.
