Description
With the nationwide free student transportation in occasional traffic, the Federal Chancellery supports student transportation when no suitable public transport is available. Companies and public institutions can apply for cost coverage on behalf of municipalities or school authorities upon fulfillment of the funding requirements. This covers the actual transportation costs to and from school, whereby a flat-rate personal contribution of €19.60 per school year must be paid by the legal guardians. Funding applications can be submitted continuously and without time limitation to the locally responsible customer team for schoolbooks/free rides at the Austrian Tax Office. Decisions are usually issued by June 30 of the respective year.
A prerequisite is entitlement to family allowance as well as attendance at a public or equivalent school within Austria or near the border abroad. The one-way school route must be at least 2 km (exception: students with disabilities) and must not be covered free of charge by other means. The student must not have reached the age of 24 at the beginning of the school year. Only costs for transportation in occasional traffic by licensed transport companies according to the Occasional Traffic Act are funded. For the 2025/26 school year, the application must be submitted by May 31, 2025, using the form “Beih 92” and the funding guideline (Ref. No. 2023-0.699.960); third-country nationals must additionally provide proof of family allowance entitlement.
