Description
The program “Attending School Abroad” supports citizens of Burgenland from the 9th grade onwards starting 01.01.2025 in completing one or two semesters at a foreign educational institution. As a non-repayable grant, the state of Burgenland provides an income-dependent and socially tiered subsidy of up to €4,200 for a school year or €2,100 for a school semester. Eligible costs include school fees, agency fees, travel and transportation expenses, as well as insurance costs. This initiative aims to expand educational opportunities for young people, strengthen intercultural competencies, and promote sustainable networking with international schools. Applications can be submitted year-round prior to the start of the stay abroad.
Eligible participants are Austrian citizens or EEA/EU citizens with primary residence in Burgenland, as well as those equated after five years of their parents’ tax residency in Austria. A prerequisite is regular attendance at a comparable foreign school for six to twelve months and possession of a BSpecial-Card issued by the State Youth Department. The applicable income limit for guardians is €106,800 gross annual income, although higher amounts may be considered in exceptional cases. Required documents for the application include, among others: the online funding application, proof of citizenship, registration certificate, confirmations from the home school and host school, income tax assessment, cost receipts for agency, travel, and insurance, booking confirmation for flight/train/bus, as well as the BSpecial-Card. Submission of the application does not establish a legal claim; the decision is made within the framework of available funds.
