Description

The Thematic Networks of Excellence for AI in Science (RAISE pilot) program supports the establishment of European top-tier networks of research laboratories that jointly apply and further develop Artificial Intelligence for strategically important disciplines. Consortia from at least three EU Member States receive up to €15 million in grants (100% funding rate) to develop a joint research agenda, establish pilot networks, integrate data and AI models, and advance standards and benchmarks. Talent and knowledge exchange, mobility programs, summer schools, and fellowships aim to accelerate knowledge transfer. Financial Support to Third Parties (FSTP) with a maximum funding amount of €60,000 per recipient strengthens additional actors and disseminates excellent expertise across Europe. The fund, specifically dedicated to R&D activities, is aimed at establishing a virtual institute where data exchange, infrastructure, and joint governance sustainably consolidate the European AI research alliance.

The program targets leading universities and research institutes with proven expertise in innovative AI solutions for scientific questions. At least half of the partners must demonstrate a proven track record in AI research. In addition to research and material costs, travel expenses and personnel costs are eligible for funding. A single-phase application submission is planned by April 21, 2026; project start is possible from January 6, 2026. Evaluation criteria include the degree of innovation and network approach, consortium composition, scaling potential, and anticipated impact. The initiative contributes to strengthening the European AI community, creating synergies with existing Horizon Europe projects, and sustainably expanding Europe’s leading position in the field of AI in Science.
