Vienna Photovoltaic Green Roof Subsidy

An ongoing funding instrument of the City of Vienna offers targeted support as a grant to citizens and companies in the fields of energy efficiency & renewable energies as well as energy efficiency & climate protection for the expansion of renewable energies. The focus is on newly installed photovoltaic systems on green roofs and as shading systems for roof landscapes with recreational character. A prerequisite is at least 800 full load hours per year as well as the possibility of feeding into the grid. The measure has been valid since June 1, 2021, and allows for a project duration of up to 24 months. All applications for the funding year 2025 were accepted by June 6, 2025, and have now been exhausted, so no new funding applications can currently be submitted.

Eligible expenses for natural and legal persons include costs for solar modules, substructures according to ÖNORM L 1131, installation work, piping, fittings and measuring devices as well as planning and consulting services, expert reports, and preliminary services. For a complete funding application, an offer from a specialist company specifying the system output, a professionally prepared proof of the projected annual green electricity yield, and a photo ID must be attached. The application must be submitted before ordering and construction start. After the funding approval, an implementation period of 24 months applies. Even though the budget for 2025 is exhausted, early project preparation for future funding rounds is recommended. Detailed guidelines and the required documents can be viewed and submitted via the central electronic application procedure at the responsible authorities.
