Description

The funding measure Grant – Herd Protection Measures in Tyrol is aimed at alpine pasture managers of sheep and goat alps who wish to establish controlled grazing as part of pilot projects and protect their herds from attacks by large predators such as wolves, bears, or lynxes. Support is provided for needs-based expert consultations and training, the purchase and installation of predator-proof fencing, investments in additional alpine infrastructure, as well as shepherd employment for animal care. Furthermore, expenses for animal health and modern GPS trackers are supported to document grazing behavior and collect scientific data. The goal is to offset the additional effort associated with herd protection and to develop practical, sustainable alpine farming concepts in Tyrol in the long term.

The funding is granted as a direct subsidy and is open to both businesses and private individuals. Prerequisite for approval is the care of the livestock by a shepherd within the framework of controlled grazing, as well as the conclusion of a funding agreement with the State of Tyrol. An informal application must include information on the type, size, and planned stocking density of the alpine pasture, the number and origin of the alpine pasture managers, previous and planned grazing management methods, a detailed breakdown of infrastructure and material costs as well as personnel costs, and a schedule. Applications should be submitted preferably by the beginning of the alpine season; early contact in the autumn before the season starts is recommended. The funding initiative is continuously available and valid until the allocated budget is exhausted.
