About the funder
Department I/4 – SMEs is a specialized division within Section I (Business Location, Innovation, and Internationalization) of the Federal Ministry for Economy, Energy and Tourism. It develops and coordinates strategic measures to strengthen small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Austria. This includes creating business-friendly framework conditions, promoting research, development, and innovation, as well as supporting internationalization initiatives and EU aid. Furthermore, the department implements thematic programs, such as in the area of entrepreneurship education within the framework of the Austrian Youth Strategy.

Mission & Vision
Department I/4 – SMEs has the mission to create a dynamic environment for small and medium-sized enterprises in Austria. Our goal is to enhance the competitiveness, innovative capacity, and international market opportunities of SMEs. We promote entrepreneurship – especially among young talents – and work closely with stakeholders from business, research, and education to strengthen sustainable growth and value creation across all regions of Austria.
Target groups
The funding and support programs of the department are aimed at small and medium-sized enterprises across all economic sectors, as well as founders and start-ups in Austria. This includes established companies investing in research and innovation, as well as young people who wish to learn and apply entrepreneurial thinking and action within the framework of the youth strategy.
