About the funder
The Gemeinnützige Hertie Foundation is a legally recognized civil law foundation headquartered in Frankfurt am Main. It was established in 1974 and builds upon the life’s work of its founder, Georg Karg. As a reform foundation, it supports projects under the guiding themes "Strengthening Democracy" and "Researching the Brain." It funds both its own operational projects (e.g., Jugend debattiert, Hertie AI, Hertie Institute for Clinical Brain Research) as well as third-party grants. With assets exceeding €1 billion and an annual funding volume of €25–30 million, it is one of the largest private foundations in Germany.

Mission & Vision
Our mission is to provide sustainable impetus for society, science, and politics. We support young people, experts, networks, institutions, and initiatives to strengthen competencies for a vibrant democracy and to advance knowledge gain in the neurosciences. As a model foundation, we bring projects to market maturity and anchor them for the long term.
Target groups
Funding applications can only be submitted by non-profit organizations and public law entities at home and abroad. Individuals are excluded. We target initiatives and institutions whose projects pursue innovative approaches and whose results benefit the general public.
