About the funder

The Bürgermut Foundation is a non-profit foundation under civil law, founded in 2007 by Elmar Pieroth, and operationally active with its headquarters in Berlin. It supports and professionalizes civil society actors, initiatives, associations, and non-profit organizations through a wide range of formats such as barcamps, workshops, webinars, awards, and publications. With programs like openTransfer, D3 – this is how digital works, Digital Social Summit, and the Scaling Workshop, it promotes knowledge transfer, digitalization, and sustainable scaling of social innovations. As an independent foundation, Bürgermut operates agilely, on equal footing, and relies on cooperation with foundations, ministries, and companies.

Mission & Vision

Change requires method. The Stiftung Bürgermut is committed to an open and diverse society in which people courageously shape their environment and realize their potential. Through networking, qualification, and process support, it empowers full-time and volunteer activists to further develop their organizations, increase impact, and spread social innovations. The goal is a strong social cohesion and a vibrant democracy.

Target groups

The foundation's programs target committed individuals and civil society organizations – from individuals and local clubs to non-profits – that address social challenges with innovative approaches. Initiatives are supported that aim to expand their impact, build professional structures, undergo digital transformation, and grow through network exchange.
