About the funder

The Stiftung Internationale Jugendbibliothek is the world's largest library for international children's and youth literature. It was founded in 1949 by Jella Lepman and is located in the historic Blutenburg Castle in Munich. The library collects, catalogs, and disseminates literature from all regions of the world and preserves a collection of over 650,000 books in more than 260 languages. In addition to open-access collections, it offers extensive historical archives, exhibitions, workshops, readings, and an international fellowship program for researchers.

Mission & Vision

The International Youth Library Foundation promotes international cultural exchange and cultural education for children, youth, and professional audiences. Children's and youth literature is regarded as a medium for fostering international understanding, conveying values such as tolerance, and broadening cultural horizons. Through exhibitions, readings, workshops, conferences, and scholarship programs, bridges are built between cultures, aiming for a peaceful, democratic future.

Target groups

Our offerings are aimed at children and young people who wish to discover international children's and youth literature and participate in workshops, teachers and school classes for guided tours, workshops, and writing studios, professional audiences and researchers who use the extensive library holdings and historical collections for study, as well as scholars from abroad who conduct research stays in Munich as part of our fellowship program.
