Description

With the call "Addressing the impact of artificial intelligence, cyberviolence, and deepfakes on equality, democracy and inclusive societies," the European Union supports transnational research consortia investigating how automated content affects equality, political participation, and social cohesion. Projects funded will develop evidence-based policy instruments and technological approaches to mitigate risks associated with AI-driven disinformation, deepfakes, and cyberviolence. Both malicious use and unintended societal side effects of AI, including algorithmic biases and gender-based discrimination, are addressed. Target groups are consortia composed of research institutions, universities, technology companies, civil society organizations, and authorities that interdisciplinarily develop new governance models, media literacy strategies, as well as technical detection and protection tools. Balanced gender representation and open science practices are integral parts of the project design.

The maximum funding amount is EUR 4,000,000 per project at a funding rate of 100%. Applications can be submitted until 23 September 2027, 17:00 Brussels time. Eligible applicants include companies, public and non-profit institutions, educational establishments, or start-ups from EU Member States or associated countries. A consortium must consist of at least three independent partners from different countries. Funding covers personnel and material costs, travel expenses, laboratory equipment, software licenses, as well as subcontractor services. Ineligible costs include, among others, real estate acquisitions and retroactive cost compensations. Evaluation criteria are excellence and innovativeness, expected societal impact, as well as quality and efficiency of implementation. A comprehensive ethics and data protection review ensures compliance with the highest legal and moral standards.
