Description

The nationwide initiative of the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWi) supports companies of all sizes in investments aimed at increasing energy and resource efficiency in industrial and commercial plants and processes. Grants of up to 60 percent of eligible costs are awarded on a competitive basis, with a maximum of €20 million per project. Funding is provided for, among other things, process and procedural changes, measures for waste heat utilization, energy-efficient heating, cooling, and ventilation systems, as well as electrification and utilization concepts for renewable energy sources. A prerequisite for application is an operational site or branch in Germany, a payback period (without funding) of more than four years, and the involvement of a qualified energy consultant or the use of a certified management system for the savings concept.

The two-stage application process begins with the submission of a project outline via the electronic easy-Online system; positively evaluated concepts may then submit a formal funding application. The preparation of the savings concept is supported concurrently – with up to 5 percent of the net investment volume, up to a maximum of €50,000. Within several competition rounds held annually, funding efficiency is determined based on greenhouse gas savings per euro of funding, which decides the ranking. Projects must be implemented within 48 months after the grant award and operated for at least three years. SMEs and contractors based in Germany thus have the opportunity to make their production processes more sustainable, reduce fossil energy consumption, and lower costs in the long term.
