Description
Within the framework of the EU-India Innovation Call, a transnational initiative is being funded that is dedicated to the development and testing of sustainable recycling processes for lithium-ion batteries. The goal is to establish a joint pilot plant in India that demonstrates innovative methods for the recovery of cobalt oxide, graphite, and other valuable materials from the "black mass." The focus lies on improving recycling efficiency, minimizing environmental impacts, and ensuring compatibility with different battery types. Participants from research institutions, industry partners, and SMEs from the EU and India will design phased work packages for proof of concept, prototyping, and field testing. Digitized logistics solutions along the entire value chain—from collection to end-of-life discharge—are also to be implemented within the project. The consortium must include at least three independent partners from EU/associated countries as well as one Indian partner in coordinated work packages and must present a consortium financing agreement. The submission deadline is 15.09.2026 (17:00 Brussels time).
With a total funding amount of €9.4 million at a funding rate of up to 70%, personnel and material costs, travel expenses, and subcontractor services will be covered. The evaluation criteria include the degree of innovation, potential for sustainable EU-India cooperation, and contribution to climate protection and resource efficiency. The results are to comply with European and Indian legal frameworks such as the Batteries Regulation and the Indian Battery Waste Management Rules. Subsequently, partners from both regions are expected to pool their expertise to leverage synergies and advance the path toward a climate-friendly circular economy for electric vehicle batteries.
