Description

The demonstration initiative for long-duration battery storage systems within the framework of the Batt4EU partnership promotes innovative projects across Europe for the integration of long-duration storage with a capacity of more than eight hours. The goal is to test system-related battery-based energy storage solutions that enhance grid stability, resilience, and flexibility. Eligible to apply are consortia consisting of at least three independent legal entities from EU or associated countries, including companies of all sizes (SMEs and large enterprises), educational institutions, non-profit, and public entities. A coordinator who has registered all partners in the Participant Register acts as the lead beneficiary. Up to 70% of eligible costs for personnel, material expenses, subcontractor services, and travel costs can be requested, with a total budget of €9.4 million. Projects may start no earlier than 05/05/2027, and applications must be submitted by 15/09/2027 (5 p.m. Brussels time). Following positive evaluation, funding is granted in the form of a subsidy, with milestones and reports contractually agreed upon.

The selection is based on the criteria of innovation content, contribution to grid stabilization and resilience, technological and economic feasibility, as well as the experience and composition of the partners. Evaluators assess excellence, expected impact, and the quality and efficiency of implementation. The consortium is determined through a transparent ranking and receives an invitation for grant preparation. Interim and final reports serve to verify the achievement of objectives. Additionally, project participants commit to disseminating results, for example through scientific publications, workshops, and participation in monitoring activities of the Batt4EU partnership. This funding instrument thus makes a significant contribution to establishing sustainable energy storage in Europe and supports the digital and green transition towards climate-neutral energy supply.
