Description

ESPRIT is a nationwide open Early-Stage program of the Austrian Science Fund FWF that supports highly qualified postdocs from all disciplines at the beginning of their scientific careers. This peer-review-based funding instrument enables independent research projects at Austrian research institutions and offers full funding (100% of the grant amount) over 36 months. Funding covers the salary of the project leaders at senior postdoc level as well as project-specific flat-rate costs ranging from €45,000 up to a maximum of €75,000 with appropriate justification. Selection criteria include the level of innovation and excellence of the project proposal, promotion of women, career and skills development, as well as strengthening visibility through publications and collaborations. Access to the program requires a time-limited doctoral certificate (not older than five years), an Austrian mentor with a career and personal development plan, and the conduct of research at a suitable institution with the necessary infrastructure. Ongoing submission via the electronic portal elane makes the program flexibly accessible.

ESPRIT focuses on the individual competence development of young researchers and aims to retain and expand excellent, innovative research at the Austrian science location. Special emphasis is placed on supporting scientists who are outside informal networks, as well as on measures for equality. A 100% funding rate and five award dates per year ensure planning reliability and equal opportunities. Mentors and applicants jointly design the career and mentoring plan, which is part of the evaluation. The program thus offers a unique opportunity for postdocs to establish their own research profile and to actively advance their scientific careers. All required documents such as application guidelines, checklist, and publication template are available for download.
