Description

The EU School Fruit and Vegetable Scheme in Thuringia (RL-SPOG) targets school authorities as well as public and private educational institutions that regularly supply primary and comprehensive school students in grades 1 to 4, as well as special needs students, with fresh fruit and vegetables. The aim of the program is to sustainably increase the proportion of these healthy foods in the daily diet and to raise children’s awareness of production and value creation processes. Accompanying educational measures such as lessons, farm visits, or excursions enhance nutritional knowledge and promote everyday skills in handling food. Authorized providers approved by the Thuringian State Administration Office enter into a written supply contract and ensure reliable delivery to participating schools for at least six months per school year.

Funding is provided in the form of a subsidy of €0.34 per portion for conventional products or €0.39 for organic deliveries, with each student receiving up to two portions per school week. Funding conditions for public relations and accompanying educational measures cover up to 100% of eligible expenses – up to a maximum of €750 per project. Projects exceeding this amount are subsidized up to 70%. Applications for fruit and vegetable supply must be submitted annually by May 1st for the following school year to the Thuringian State Office for Agriculture and Rural Areas (TLLLR). For educational and accompanying measures, a formal application must be submitted no later than six weeks before implementation. Required documents include, among others, the approval form, the written supply contract, the grant application, and, if applicable, proof of organic products. The program contributes to health promotion and nutrition education in Thuringian schools and supports sustainable use of agricultural products.
