Description

The bilateral funding initiative of the Federal Ministry of Research, Technology and Spaceflight (BMFTR) supports collaborations between German universities, research institutions, and small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and their Taiwanese partners. The goal is to establish long-term innovation partnerships in the field of Artificial Intelligence to develop methodological breakthroughs and application-oriented technologies. Both fundamental research collaborations and industry-related development projects are funded. Focus topics include decentralized Edge AI, hybrid models, intelligent manufacturing, predictive simulations, and AI-supported agriculture. A two-stage selection process initially allows for the submission of a German-English project outline, followed by an invitation to submit a full application. Scientific excellence, innovation content, and the strategic relevance of the partnership constitute the central evaluation criteria.

Funding is provided as a non-repayable grant covering up to 100% of eligible expenses, with a total funding amount of up to €1.2 million per collaborative project. The maximum possible duration is 36 months. Eligible cost items include, among others, personnel costs, travel expenses, equipment and instrument costs, project flat rates for universities, contract research, as well as measures for science communication. Basic equipment such as standard hardware and software as well as real estate are not funded. A prerequisite is the involvement of at least one German and one Taiwanese entity, the EU SME definition for commercial partners, and proof of a business establishment or branch in Germany. Project outlines can be submitted electronically via the easy-Online system until December 12, 2025. The initiative deepens knowledge transfer between science and industry and contributes to the implementation of the Hightech Agenda Germany as well as the FITS 2030 Innovation Agenda.
