Description
The Corona Foundation supports outstanding scientists (including medical doctors) at German medical faculties with the program “Research Group Cardiovascular and Neurovascular Diseases” to establish an independently led junior research group over five years. Funding of up to one million euros covers personnel and material costs for preclinical and clinical studies as well as epidemiological and genetic investigations at the interface between basic and translational research – from experimental models to patient-related applications. Prerequisites include secured position funding, a doctorate obtained 4–10 years ago (Dr. med.) or 8 years ago (PhD), and evidence of outstanding scientific achievements. Applicants must submit a concept outline with CV, publication list, budget and milestone plan, as well as a letter of support from the hosting clinic or institute by February 15, 2026.
The selection takes place in two stages: from a maximum of six concept outlines, full applications are requested, from which up to two research projects are selected for funding following a presentation to the advisory board. Evaluation criteria include the scientific profile, innovation potential, and the interdisciplinary and translational approach with therapeutic relevance. The hosting university must demonstrate substantial own contributions and provide scope for clinical and scientific activities. With this structurally innovative, person-centered funding, the Corona Foundation aims to make a significant contribution to developing new therapeutic approaches against cardiovascular diseases and stroke, and to sustainably strengthen the careers of outstanding researchers.
