Description

The Franz Schnabel Prize is awarded every two years by the Kurpfalz Foundation Franz Schnabel of the Mannheim Antiquities Association and honors outstanding theses in the historical sciences and related disciplines. Bachelor’s and Master’s theses graded “very good” as well as dissertations graded “summa cum laude” or “magna cum laude” that have been submitted within the last two years before the deadline are eligible. Awarded are research contributions on the history of the city of Mannheim and the former Electoral Palatinate in the fields of politics, society, economy, culture, and literature. In addition to a monetary prize, there is the possibility of financial support for the publication of the work, thereby making the acquired findings accessible to a broader audience.

Applications must include the thesis or dissertation, an official grade transcript, and a letter of recommendation from a university professor. The selection committee consists of lecturers from the Universities of Mannheim and Heidelberg, who decide on the award based on the criteria of outstanding academic achievement and relevance to regional history. The Franz Schnabel Prize supports young scholars not only by conferring academic prestige but also by contributing to the publication and dissemination of their research. Award-winning works thus make a lasting contribution to enriching local and regional historical research.
