Description

The Hans and Walter Thirring Prize annually honors outstanding research achievements by young physicists whose work has been published in recognized scientific journals. Established in memory of Hans Thirring (1888–1976) and Walter Thirring (1927–2014), this prize recognizes excellent contributions from all areas of physics. With an endowment of €4,000, the award is dedicated to promoting science and innovation in Vienna. The prize is granted by the Mathematical-Natural Sciences Class of the Austrian Academy of Sciences based on an international peer-review process and represents a significant recognition of scientific excellence.

Eligible to participate are researchers up to a maximum of eight years after completing their doctorate, who obtained it at an Austrian university or are employed at a university or research institution in Austria at the time of nomination. Self-nominations are excluded: nominations are only accepted from established colleagues or supervisors. The submission includes a personal commendation of the nominee (scientific career, international visibility, impact on the field, and presentation of research achievements), a tabular CV with a list of publications, and up to three PDFs of the most important publications. Nominations can be submitted annually by April 15. This deadline allows for a thorough review and recognition of the next generation of leading physicists in Austria.
