Description

The Heimat-Werkstatt promotes innovative formats in North Rhine-Westphalia in which citizens explore and actively shape local identity through open discussion and collaborative processes. As an experimental meeting space, the funding program serves as a catalyst for community projects that link time-honored traditions with new perspectives. Whether interactive neighborhood walks, digital documentation apps, or participatory exhibitions – Heimat-Werkstatt supports initiatives with budgets ranging from 1,000 to 10,000 euros and covers up to 90 percent of eligible expenses. Within twelve months, moderation costs, material and technical expenses, room rental, public relations, as well as beverage and catering costs are funded, along with collaboration with experienced experts. The goal is to strengthen the sense of community and attract new participants to local civic engagement.

Eligible to apply are municipalities as well as private and non-profit organizations with headquarters or project implementation in North Rhine-Westphalia. Concepts are sought that address locally significant topics in a transparent, publicly accessible process and involve people of all ages and backgrounds. Public mandatory tasks are excluded. Applications can be submitted continuously via the online portal of the responsible district government. Required documents include a detailed project description, a cost and financing plan, proof of location in NRW, and, if applicable, a consent declaration from property owners. After evaluating the quality of the discussion process, the connection to local identity, sustainability, and diversity of participation, funding is granted – a starting signal for new impulses in the neighborhoods and villages of the state.
