Description
The call "Hydrogen cities" supports the development and implementation of hydrogen strategies in European cities with a total budget of €5 million. Municipal administrations from EU Member States and associated countries can submit applications within a single-stage procedure between 09.02.2027 and 07.10.2027. The objective is the decarbonization of industrial and mobility-related sectors in local and peri-urban areas through twinning: cities form partnerships with established Hydrogen Valleys to access proven innovations, technology options, and business models. Supported by researchers, companies, and civil society representatives, tailored roadmaps, feasibility studies, impact analyses, as well as training and dissemination activities are developed. Eligible costs include personnel, material and travel expenses, event costs, and coordination efforts (funding rate 100%).
Applicant institutions must submit a Memorandum of Understanding with the Climate-Neutral and Smart Cities Mission Platform and either belong to the EU Mission Cities or be seeking participation. Selection is based on the criteria of innovation level, contribution to the Clean Hydrogen Partnership, project quality, and expected impact on air quality and decarbonization. Submissions from public, educational, and research institutions, non-profit organizations, as well as companies of all sizes are welcome. Evaluation results are expected in spring 2028, with project implementation possible from 09.02.2027 onwards. This call strengthens the networking of pilot regions, promotes the realization of climate-friendly hydrogen applications in cities, and supports the objectives of the EU Mission for climate-neutral, smart cities by 2030.
