Description

InAWi: Climate Peatland Protection – Preparation for Rewetting in Peatland Regions promotes integrative environmental protection measures for the systematic planning and implementation of restoration projects in peatland sites relevant to nature conservation. The Federal Ministry for the Environment specifically supports activities that restore the water balance in drained peatlands and thus reduce climate-damaging greenhouse gas emissions in the long term. Project sponsors are given the opportunity to carry out hydraulic analyses, land-use planning, and ecological assessments to expertly prepare for rewetting. By strategically focusing on peatland ecosystems, this not only contributes to national climate protection but also strengthens the biodiversity of these sensitive habitats.

The funding is aimed at non-profit organizations, public institutions, and educational establishments that plan or implement projects for the restoration of peatland areas in Germany, particularly in Brandenburg. Preparatory investigations, concept development, and participation processes are supported to ensure effective and sustainable rewetting. Applications can be submitted until December 31, 2027. Interested sponsors benefit from financial support in the form of a grant, which enables professional planning as well as close collaboration with experts in hydrology and nature conservation. This funding opportunity offers the chance to preserve peatlands as significant carbon sinks and to restore ecosystem functions in the long term.
