Description
The EU initiative “Increasing the circularity of the bio-based sector: upcycling and recycling for higher value and environmental benefits” supports innovative projects for the development and scaling of circular, bio-based materials, products, and processes in Europe. Funding is provided to small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), research institutions, and non-profit organizations based in an EU member state or associated country with proven experience in research and innovation projects within the bioeconomy sector. The focus is on upcycling and recycling of secondary raw materials to produce environmentally friendly and high-quality materials. The total funding amount is EUR 12 million, with a funding rate of 70%, supporting up to 2 project proposals with up to EUR 6 million each. Eligible costs include personnel expenses, material costs, subcontracting, and travel expenses, while acquisition of real estate, equipment exceeding the budget limit, and retrospective costs are excluded. Submissions are possible until 22 September 2027.
The core objective is to increase circularity in the bio sector through the development of market-ready solutions. Applicant teams must present a detailed project plan including project description, financing plan, CVs of key personnel, and the standard application template (HE RIA/IA). Evaluation criteria include the level of innovation, contribution to climate protection and circular economy, as well as the quality and efficiency of implementation. By involving social science experts and digital tools, societal acceptance and traceability are to be improved. The European Commission expects close cooperation with other EU-funded projects to create synergies and strengthen European bioeconomy strategies. The funding guideline also supports the EU Green Deal objectives and contributes to the defossilization and strategic autonomy of European industry.
