Description
This Europe-wide open call is aimed at consortia from industry, research institutions, public procurement authorities, and non-profit organizations that wish to jointly develop and demonstrate scalable production processes for next-generation lithium batteries (TRL 4–7). The focus is on cell development, module/pack integration, automation, and system integration for automotive, aviation, rail, and waterborne sectors. Participating actors must include at least three independent organizations from different EU Member States or associated countries and conduct an open market dialogue as well as pass through four phases, each with three competing proposals. The funding amount per project is approximately €33.3 million, with a funding rate of up to 70%. Eligible expenses include research and development services, pilot production with automation, module/pack integration and testing, as well as travel costs for consortium meetings; however, large-scale serial production and marketing expenses are excluded.
The call opens with the publication of the tender documents in June 2026 and closes on 08.10.2026 at 17:00 Brussels time. Timely submission of the complete project proposal (Part A + B), including a market analysis report and proof of the consortium agreement, is mandatory. Evaluation criteria include innovation content, technology readiness and feasibility, economic viability, as well as contribution to sustainability and European competitiveness. Selected projects will receive seed funding for pilot production and serve as beacons for the European battery innovation ecosystem. Support by the European Partnerships Batt4EU and Made in Europe, as well as the application of SSbD criteria (Safe and Sustainable by Design), are integral parts of the implementation.
