The state of Saxony-Anhalt supports forest owners in projects related to near-natural forest management (preparatory work, forest conversion including reforestation, stand maintenance, improvement measures, soil protection liming), in the development of joint forest management plans, and in the construction of forestry roads to improve forestry infrastructure.

Description
Measures for near-natural forest management, development of forest management plans, and forestry road construction (Forest Directive 2019) supports forest owners in Saxony-Anhalt with grants from the joint task “Improvement of Agricultural Structures and Coastal Protection” (GAK) as well as the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development (EAFRD). Eligible for funding are natural and legal persons under private and public law, including recognized forestry associations. Excluded are corporate forests over 150 hectares as well as legal entities with at least 25% public capital participation and areas transferred free of charge for nature conservation purposes. The grant is awarded continuously and depends on the type and scope of the requested projects.
Supported are preparatory work, forest conversion including afforestation, stand maintenance and improvement, soil protection liming, the creation of joint forest management plans, and the construction of forestry roads. Applications can be submitted year-round to the responsible offices for agriculture, land consolidation, and forestry (ALFF); exceptions apply for timber storage sites and forest fire protection measures with deadlines on March 1 and September 1 respectively. Proof of ownership or the lessor’s consent is required. The de minimis thresholds are EUR 500 (stand maintenance/improvement), EUR 1,000 (other measures), and EUR 5,000 (forestry road construction). The objective is to improve forest stands and forestry infrastructure through near-natural maintenance and development measures as well as to promote cooperative management models to strengthen the structure and sustainability of forests in Saxony-Anhalt.
