Description

The Mathematics Olympiad in Germany offers talented and committed students from grades 3 to 13 a multi-stage competition that progresses from the school level to the international stage. Each year, around 200,000 participants face current tasks in the school, regional, state, and federal rounds that require not only calculation skills but also precise thinking, creative approaches, and solid subject knowledge. Prizes and awards include medals, material and cash prizes, as well as qualification for the selection competition for the International Mathematics Olympiad. Subject teachers receive the materials through the state coordinators; the school round begins annually at the start of the school year, with subsequent rounds taking place during the school year depending on the federal state.

The non-profit sponsor is the Verein Mathematik-Olympiaden e. V., which, in close cooperation with Bildung & Begabung and the Federal Ministry of Education and Research, is responsible for organization, grading, and evaluation. Participation requirements include registration through the school or the respective state coordinator and valid participation in grades 3 to 13 at a German educational institution. Evaluation criteria are problem-solving competence, mathematical understanding, and creativity in finding solutions. Funding is provided annually and enables students not only to receive top-level content support but also to engage in professional exchange and meet like-minded peers. The program especially supports mathematically interested young people, for whom the Olympiad offers exciting competition problems and sustainable impulses for their educational path.
