Description

The EU-funded research initiative “Microbiome for terrestrial livestock sustainability and health within a One Health approach” aims to develop innovative microbiome-based solutions for sustainable livestock farming. The focus is on the interactions between host microbiome, animal health, productivity, and environmental influences. Funding is provided for research & innovation, agriculture, health, environmental and climate protection, as well as social and labor aspects, with a funding rate of 100%. Eligible applicants are companies and public institutions from EU Member States as well as Horizon Europe-associated countries. A total of €5–6 million per project is available, which can be used for personnel, material, travel costs, and subcontractor services.

Multi-phase research and innovation projects (HORIZON-RIA) with single submissions are funded until 23 September 2027. Eligibility according to Horizon Europe Regulation and compliance with excellence, impact, and implementation criteria are prerequisites. Target groups include international research teams, farmers, veterinary scientists, and stakeholders in the livestock sector aiming to reduce antimicrobial resistance, ensure animal welfare, and minimize environmental impacts. Core activities include investigating microbiome dynamics under holobiont aspects, establishing integrated data monitoring systems for animal, plant, and human health, modeling holistic health strategies, and developing practical intervention approaches for zoonosis prevention and reduction of antibiotic use. Cross-project linkage with existing EU initiatives and partnerships in the One Health context is expected.
