Description

Museum funding in Vienna supports economically independent state and municipal museums as well as museums of other legal entities of supraregional significance that provide substantial in-house contributions. The aim is to strengthen the museum as a place of social discourse through contemporary collection presentations, curatorially relevant special exhibitions, and special mediation projects. In addition, specialist projects for collection care – such as restoration and conservation, digital inventory, and object security measures – can be submitted. Construction measures, ongoing operating expenses, the acquisition of museum objects, and publications such as catalogues are not funded. Applications can be submitted annually by October 31; a prerequisite is either the Austrian Museum Quality Seal (ICOM definition) or proof of concrete measures to achieve these quality standards.

Comprehensive documentation is required for the application, including meaningful museum concepts, restoration plans, project reports, cost estimates, schedules, a one-page project summary, and a brief description of the institution and its sponsorship. The funding is provided as a grant, with a budgeted volume of approximately 2.13 million euros. The Art and Culture Section of the Federal Ministry for Housing, Arts, Culture, Media and Sport manages the processing, thereby ensuring a transparent framework. This funding line sets sustainable impulses to position museums in Vienna in a future-oriented manner, increase the societal relevance of their collections, and establish innovative forms of mediation. Interested institutions thus receive an attractive opportunity to professionally further develop their programs and present them effectively in the long term.
