Awards of the City of Vienna in the Field of Culture and Science

Since 1947, the City of Vienna has honored outstanding achievements in culture and science through awards granted annually or at fixed intervals. On the recommendation of independent expert committees, prizes are awarded in the fields of architecture, visual arts, literature, music (composition), media art, journalism, humanities, social sciences, cultural and legal studies, medical sciences, as well as mathematics, computer science, natural sciences, and technology. Finally, the award also recognizes contributions to public education. The prize money ranges from €4,000 to €10,000 per award, depending on the category. A formal application is not required, as the selection is made exclusively by expert juries who assess the significance of the respective achievements for Vienna and their contribution to the city's development.

Both individuals and teams are supported, who with their projects, publications, or artistic works strengthen Vienna as a location and reinforce its reputation as a vibrant center of culture and science. In addition to the classic lifetime achievement awards, the funding offerings also include awards for emerging talents, promotional prizes, and special awards such as the H.C. Artmann Prize for outstanding poetry, awarded every two years, or the Veza Canetti Prize for German-speaking female authors. The diversity of the awardees reflects the broad spectrum of Vienna's cultural landscape and invites close attention to the latest developments in art, literature, and research.
