Description

The funding program "Sustainable and Competitive Cell Production Techniques for Lithium-ion And Sodium-ion Batteries (BATT4EU Partnership)" supports EU-wide consortia of companies (especially SMEs), pilot plants, and research institutions from December 3, 2026, to March 31, 2027. The objective is the development and demonstration of modular pilot production lines for lithium-ion and sodium-ion battery cells with innovative, energy-efficient manufacturing processes and digitalization approaches. Both low-energy processes for electrode mixing, cell core assembly, formation, and aging, as well as novel inline quality controls and advanced digitalization tools for improved process control, are funded. The selected projects must demonstrate significantly lower CAPEX, OPEX, energy consumption, and environmental impact compared to the state of the art through techno-economic assessments (TEA) and life cycle analyses (LCA). With a funding rate of up to 70% and a total budget of €37,800,000, personnel and equipment costs, subcontractor services, travel, and material expenses are covered.

Submitting consortia must consist of at least three independent legal entities from EU member states or associated countries and comply with requirements regarding legal, financial, and operational capacity. The projects are aligned with the objectives of the European Battery Partnership Batt4EU and report on KPIs. Applications are submitted via the EU Funding & Tenders Portal. Required documents include the project description, CVs of key personnel, financing plan, market analysis, and tender documents. The results make a central contribution to strengthening the competitiveness and sustainability of the European battery industry, climate protection, and supporting resource-efficient, digital production.
