Department 5 – Nature and Environmental Protection within the Office of the Salzburg State Government is responsible for official nature conservation in the state of Salzburg. Since 1974, the Salzburg Mountain and Nature Watch, as sworn nature conservation officers within this department, has supported the authorities in monitoring protected areas, enforcing nature conservation regulations, implementing biotope protection measures, and environmental education. The Mountain and Nature Watch organizes training courses, patrols in sensitive habitats, and public awareness and educational projects.

Department 5 is committed to the long-term preservation of Salzburg's ecological diversity. Its goal is to ensure an intact natural environment and sustainable use of the landscape through monitoring, protection, and awareness-raising, in cooperation with the Salzburg Mountain and Nature Watch. It promotes volunteer engagement and knowledge transfer to inspire future generations for nature conservation.

The services and operations of Department 5 and the Salzburg Mountain and Nature Watch are aimed at sworn nature conservation officers (volunteer staff), authorities and district administrative authorities in the state of Salzburg, schools, associations, and the interested public in the state of Salzburg, as well as visitors and users of protected areas, who are to be reached through education and information.
