The Axel Springer Freedom Foundation gGmbH is a non-profit organization based in Hamburg, originating from the commitment of the publishing founder Axel Springer. Founded in 2023 by Axel Springer SE, the foundation supports human rights defenders, dissidents, and artists and media professionals from authoritarian states worldwide. It organizes events, exhibitions, and publications, raises funds, and connects political decision-makers with activists to promote freedom, democracy, and human rights. The foundation builds on Axel Springer's legacy, who during the Cold War already secured the release of political prisoners, supported their families, and promoted dissident publications.
