About the funder

The Federal Ministry for Innovation, Mobility and Infrastructure (BMIMI) is the highest federal authority responsible for transport policy, applied research, and technology development in Austria. Within BMIMI, Section II – Mobility shapes the legal and financial framework conditions for a sustainable mobility transition. Department II/6 actively promotes walking, cycling, and intelligent mobility management. Since 2020, the klimaaktiv mobil program has provided continuously increasing funds – in 2022, approximately €60 million were allocated for the expansion of cycling and pedestrian infrastructure, job bike schemes, e-bike fleets, and awareness-raising measures. In addition to financial support, the department offers comprehensive advice and partner networks for municipalities, cities, companies, as well as tourism, leisure, education, and youth institutions.

Mission & Vision

The Division II/6 of BM Innovation, Mobility and Infrastructure pursues the mission of permanently embedding active, climate-friendly mobility within Austrian society and thereby making a significant contribution to achieving the national climate targets. Through targeted funding programs, expert advice, and cooperation at all administrative levels, it creates the foundation for a sustainable modal shift towards walking and cycling as well as innovative mobility management solutions.

Target groups

The target group consists of municipal and regional authorities based in Austria (cities, municipalities, regions, as well as state administrations), companies and fleet operators of all sizes, tourism, leisure, educational and youth institutions, as well as non-profit organizations and initiatives that implement projects to promote walking and cycling, mobility management, or awareness-raising for active mobility. Funding is provided to institutions that are professionally and personnel-wise capable of implementing innovative and climate-friendly mobility measures.
