About the funder

The E.W. Kuhlmann Foundation was established in 1997 by Edith and Edmund Kuhlmann in Hamburg as a foundation under civil law. Long-standing activities have included, among others, assistance for degree completion and revolving scholarships with interest-free loans for students, support for outpatient hospices, training grants for apprentices in declining professions, scholarships for internships, school projects in India and Nepal, start-ups in Africa, integration of refugees, as well as support for charitable associations and individuals. More than 1,000 students have received financial aid to date; the foundation is a member of the Association of German Foundations and is audited by KPMG and Commerzbank. Since November 2024, the foundation has focused on two areas: the awarding of scholarships through universities (project fundgiving-at-universities) and the granting of awards to university graduates (Degree Completion Award).

Mission & Vision

The E.W. Kuhlmann Foundation aims to act responsibly, frugally, and with entrepreneurial wisdom using the assets contributed by the founders. Its decision-making body operates according to the principles of Occam’s Razor and Albert Einstein’s maxim “make everything as simple as possible, but not simpler,” in order to process applications quickly, efficiently, and under dignified conditions. The foundation adheres to the "Principles of Good Foundation Practice" of the Association of German Foundations and refrains from unnecessary administrative expenses.

Target groups

The funding opportunities are aimed at individuals of all ages who wish to improve their situation through their own efforts (help for self-help), particularly students in the final phase of their studies seeking scholarships, interest-free graduation loans, or awards. Additionally, institutions and organizations that plan innovative and sustainable projects and require financial support are also supported.
