About the funder

The Fonds zur Förderung der wissenschaftlichen Forschung (FWF) is the central funding agency for excellent, knowledge-oriented basic research in Austria. It awards competitive grants for individual projects, careers, collaborations, and special initiatives based on an international peer-review process. The FWF is supervised by the Federal Ministry of Education, Science and Research and, in addition to national programs, also administers funds from the Zukunft Österreich Fund (managed by the Nationalstiftung FTE).

Mission & Vision

The FWF serves the advancement of the sciences at the highest international level. It promotes the quantitative and qualitative expansion of research potential according to the principle of "training through research," strengthens Austria's attractiveness as a location for science, and contributes to cultural development, value creation, and prosperity through its independent, international evaluation.

Target groups

Excellent scientists from all disciplines at Austrian research institutions are supported. The target group comprises individuals and teams engaged in basic research who make internationally visible, innovative contributions. The programs are aimed at researchers in early to late career stages as well as at collaborative projects with national and international partners.
