Hortich-Stiftung zu Aken
About the funder
The Hortich Foundation was established in 1609 by Pastor Kilian (Chilanium) Hortich in Aken on the Elbe. As a family foundation, it aims to facilitate access to higher education and vocational training for young people through financial scholarships. The funds have originated for centuries from the lease income of a historic "scholarship hide" (6 hectares of arable land), which was preserved through all political upheavals. After a dormant period during the GDR era, the foundation was officially reactivated in 2006 by the Saxony-Anhalt State Administration Office and has since awarded scholarships annually. The allocation is overseen by a board of trustees, which includes the pastor and four elected "Vierherrn."
