About the funder
The Ilse Balg Foundation is a non-profit foundation under civil law, established in 2000 and headquartered in a listed residential and commercial building in Berlin-Tiergarten. It promotes research and education in the field of urban studies and social urban development, particularly supporting master's, diploma, and doctoral theses as well as scientific studies and concepts, further education and training in the area of urban planning, competitions for high school graduates (Balg-Mächler Student Prize) and early-career researchers (Scientific Balg-Mächler Prize), the preservation and cataloguing of the estates of Ilse Balg and Martin Mächler, and the organization of salons on current topics in urban development. The board members and advisory councils work on a voluntary basis, and the foundation maintains a library as well as close cooperation with the Berlin City Museum.

Mission & Vision

Through competitions, salons, and educational programs, the foundation aims to provide impetus for a socially responsible and sustainable design of the urban living environment.
Target groups
The funding opportunities of the Ilse Balg Foundation are aimed at upper secondary school students who submit special academic achievements on the topic of the city (Balg-Mächler Student Award), students and doctoral candidates in Berlin and Brandenburg who write theses in architecture, urban planning, sociology, urban history, political science, geography, and related disciplines at universities of applied sciences and universities (Scientific Balg-Mächler Award), professional audiences and interested laypersons who participate in the Foundation’s salons, as well as researchers and practitioners in the field of urban development seeking access to the archive and estates of Ilse Balg and Martin Mächler.
