About the funder

The Leibniz Institute for Virology (LIV) is a non-profit, independent research institution under the sponsorship of a civil law foundation. Since 1995, it has been a member of the Leibniz Association and is jointly funded by the Federal Ministry of Health as well as the Authority for Science, Research and Equality of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg. The focus is on basic and applied research on human pathogenic viruses. The goal is to understand viral pathogenesis and to develop innovative therapeutic approaches for diseases such as AIDS, influenza, hepatitis, and newly emerging infections.

Mission & Vision

As an institution of the Leibniz Association, the LIV's mission is to make sustainable contributions to public health through excellent experimental virology. The institute aims to provide improved therapeutic methods against viral infectious diseases in a timely manner based on solid fundamental research, thereby strengthening global health.

Target groups

The funding program of the LIV is primarily aimed at early-career researchers at the institute, in particular postdoctoral researchers, doctoral candidates, and visiting scientists in the virology research groups. Furthermore, the LIV supports female scientists in Leibniz institutions within the framework of equality and mentoring programs.
