About the funder

Since its founding in 2005, the Musical Competence Center Saxony-Anhalt (MKM) has been active as a state project within the Cultural Office of the state capital Magdeburg in the field of musical education. It designs and implements innovative projects and workshops to specifically enable access to schools and young audiences in Saxony-Anhalt for new music and contemporary composers. In doing so, the MKM acts as a networking hub between general education schools, music universities, associations, and independent organizations, independently promoting projects of independent institutions, clubs, and actors with a focus on music cultural education.

Mission & Vision

The MKM sees itself as a bridge between contemporary music culture and school education in Saxony-Anhalt. Its goal is to make musical diversity tangible, to present the work of regional and supraregional composers, and to establish long-term collaborations between educational institutions, cultural organizations, and stakeholders. Through practice-oriented offerings, it promotes artistic and creative engagement with new music and contributes to the cultural education of young people in the region.

Target groups

The MKM's offerings are aimed at music teachers and their advanced students, as well as students of musicology and music education. Additional target groups include teachers at general education schools (primary schools, secondary schools, and grammar schools), music lecturers in the field of contemporary music, project sponsors with educational policy initiatives, as well as musicians and composers. Furthermore, the MKM addresses all those interested in contemporary music and promotes professional exchange between institutions and stakeholders in Saxony-Anhalt.
