About the funder

Okeanos Foundation for the Sea is an independent private law foundation based in Darmstadt, dedicated to the protection, research, and sustainable use of marine ecosystems. Originally active in the Pacific region, it supported traditional Polynesian catamarans ("Vaka") for research and disaster preparedness. Since 2019, Okeanos has been operating and providing funding in Germany and Europe, collaborating with research institutions such as the Leibniz Centre for Tropical Marine Research and Victoria University Wellington, initiating citizen science projects in the Mediterranean, and implementing educational programs and journalism scholarships aboard the "Vaka Okeanos."
