About the funder

The Possehl Foundation is a non-profit foundation based in the old town of Lübeck, established in 1919 in accordance with the will of its founder Emil Possehl. It is the sole shareholder of the corporate group L. Possehl & Co. mbH, whose revenues have formed the basis for its funding activities for over 100 years. Each year, the foundation supports more than 500 applications in Lübeck and is active in the fields of monument preservation, cityscape, charitable institutions, youth, art & science, as well as individual assistance for people in social distress. Furthermore, it awards prizes in art, music, engineering, and architecture and is a shareholder of the European Hanseatic Museum Lübeck and the KOLK17 Puppet Theater & Museum.

Mission & Vision

The Possehl Foundation is committed to promoting "all that is good and beautiful in Lübeck" and to sustainably improving the quality of life in the Hanseatic city. In accordance with its founder Emil Possehl’s intentions, it supports the preservation of architecture and the cityscape, strengthens charitable institutions and youth, promotes art and science, and provides assistance where people have fallen into social hardship.

Target groups

Non-profit institutions and associations in Lübeck, as well as private individuals and project sponsors, are supported. This includes owners and initiatives for monument protection and urban preservation, associations and institutions engaged in youth work, social and charitable organizations, universities, research institutions, as well as artistic and scientific projects, and individuals and groups requiring individual assistance in cases of social need or wishing to realize innovative cultural undertakings.
