Stiftung "Aufmüpfige Frauen"
About the funder
The Aufmüpfige Frauen Foundation is an independent, non-profit public law foundation based in Dortmund, founded in 2004 by Prof. emerita Dr. Sigrid Metz-Göckel. It promotes gender equality and awards the "Aufmüpfige Frau" prize biennially to women* who demonstrate commitment to justice and the common good through conviction, civil courage, and creative engagement. The foundation understands defiance as a political category that questions traditional gender relations and addresses them as a socio-economic inequality. It supports projects and individuals who, without extensive organizational backing, initiate social change and provide sustainable impulses for feminism.

Mission & Vision
The Stiftung "Aufmüpfige Frauen" advocates for a constructive defiance that is stronger than anger. Our goal is to recognize and empower women* from politics, science, culture, and everyday life who, with courage, perseverance, and a clear sense of justice, bring about change towards greater gender equality. With the "Aufmüpfige Frau" award, we aim to appreciatively support these women and make their work visible to a broad public, in order to provide impetus for a more feminist-oriented society.
Target groups
The target group of the Stiftung "Aufmüpfige Frauen" consists of individuals or groups of women* who independently, without extensive organizational support, advocate for gender equality and women's rights. This includes women from all sectors of society – politics, science, art, social work – who pursue original approaches, challenge male dominance, and promote the common good through their commitment. The award is deliberately aimed at women who are already known but not yet internationally famous, in order to recognize and strengthen their innovative projects and personal dedication.
