About the funder
The Ettersberg Foundation is a non-profit foundation under civil law based in Weimar, founded in 1999 at the initiative of the Spanish writer and concentration camp survivor Jorge Semprún and endowed by the Free State of Thuringia. It is dedicated to the comparative study of European dictatorships of the 20th century, the scholarly examination of the SED dictatorship, and historical remembrance as the sponsor of the Andreasstraße Memorial and Education Center in Erfurt. Its program includes international symposia, academic day seminars, workshops and specialist conferences, the awarding of doctoral and research scholarships, two own publication series (“European Dictatorships and Their Overcoming” and “Processing Compact”), historical-political exhibitions, student and teacher projects, as well as museum educational formats.

Mission & Vision
"Researching dictatorships – strengthening democracy." The Ettersberg Foundation sees itself as a platform for dialogue on German and European dictatorship history and promotes a history awareness that supports democracy. It works interdisciplinarily and non-partisanly, combining scientific research with historical-political education and emphasizes multiperspectivity, appreciation of the individual, and inquiry-based learning.
Target groups
The offerings of the Ettersberg Foundation are aimed at researchers, early-career scholars and students, historical-political educators, teachers and schools, pupils within the framework of competitions and workshops, contemporary witnesses and civil society initiatives, museum and memorial visitors, as well as the interested public in Germany and Europe, and inclusion-oriented groups and people with disabilities. Through events, publications, scholarships, exhibitions, and digital formats, the Ettersberg Foundation contributes insights into dictatorship research in both academic and non-university contexts, thereby strengthening democratic coexistence.
